When thinking about homelessness and what I was going to write about, my intentions were just to inform about homelessness in general and why it's not talked about a lot. after doing some research, I realized that homelessness has its own category of living and causes.
I you would like to read my paper:
Homelessness is not an ordinary issue; it is one that relies on the people. Homelessness is an issue and affordable housing is not the only problem. Homelessness is one of the most significant global issues to date and one of the oldest. Homelessness is not caused by one reason and has not been solved, because other causes for homelessness, such as past imprisonment, social/identity issues, the recent pandemic, and mental health, are not addressed by affordable housing, it is not the only solution to end homelessness.

Along my research I have found and are still finding websites and podcast on homelessness. These websites and podcasts are useful for when it comes to understanding a lot of information I don't know. This research focuses on the misconceptions of homelessness, the different types of homelessness, and what it would take to prevent and possibly end it. Each source explores the world of homelessness unseen to others.
“Global Homelessness Statistics — Homeless World Cup.” Homeless World Cup, https://www.homelessworldcup.org/homelessness-statistics/
Don't let the name fool you the Homeless World Cup is an organization that dedicates its work to inspiring people who are homeless to change their lives and changing those who are potentially on their way to being homeless. This website tries to explore homelessness in a fun way. With each country comes a fact about their soccer team but also a problem that's causing homelessness in that country's homeland. Although this website can be seen as childish or not made for adults, it is one of the most useful sites that gives out information about almost every country.
Hagy, Reese. “Homeless Prevention Strategies: What We've Learned – Institute of Global Homelessness.” Institute of Global Homelessness, 25 March 2021, https://ighomelessness.org/homeless-prevention-strategies-what-weve-learned/
This article by Reese Hagy discusses how the community can work to help prevent homelessness. He interviews Abe Obudshoorn who writes international journals on Homelessness. He talks about how in Canada they have taken different methods to help prevent, which is why Canada's homelessness rate isn't as high as others. It talks about the importance of identifying the existence of homelessness and doing something to help and not just ignoring it. Each homeless person has their own reason for being in their position. Financial support throughout the years has progressed to help prevent homelessness from happening because financial assistance was the highest cause of homelessness. Projects worldwide have been put to identify the less visible to the world. The quality of having good resources.
Lacroix, Patricia. “Causes Of Homelessness.” The Homeless Hub, 9 July 2014, https://www.homelesshub.ca/about-homelessness/homelessness-101/causes-homelessness
This talks about how those who are homeless shouldn't be seen as outcasts and are a part of society. This more focuses on how personal problems and domestic violence can be a big factor in young kids/adults being homeless. It also talks about the rate of homelessness in Canada and how it differs from the US. Poverty happens all over the world and is one of the biggest contributors to putting people on the street. Countries need to be able to adapt to the people and give housing plans to those who are struggling, especially those who are vets, living in poverty, and those who have been abandoned by their families. Key factors can include the lack of adequate income, access to affordable housing and health support, and/or the experience of discrimination.
Rajpari, Aahil. “What is Homelessness and Why is it an Issue? – UAB Institute for Human Rights Blog.” Uab, 9 March 2020, https://sites.uab.edu/humanrights/2020/03/09/what-is-homelessness-and-why-is-it-an-issue/
This explains what it means to be homeless and the stem of it. In the 1950s homelessness was an idea to get away and explore the world. About 2.5 billion people across the globe are considered to have a home. Meanwhile, at least 150 million are homeless and 1.6 people are lacking appropriate housing. Australia and Canada have plans to address homelessness, with the latter two, Germany and Sweden, not having any type of national plan. The US has plans to prevent homelessness as well. All five of these countries have the most homeless people recorded. For industrialized countries, it seems hard to believe that they struggle the most. The problem with these countries is that they focus too much on their structure than their people.
“What Are the Different Types of Homelessness?” Eccovia, 9 June 2022, https://eccovia.com/different-types-of-homelessness/
This article talks about how homelessness is multidimensional and a complicated experience to touch upon. There are 4 types of homeless that people will sometimes refer to as. Chronic, Episodic, Tertiary, and Transitional homelessness. Each definition is different depending on the amount of time a person has been homeless. There is a term called couch surfing which is when a person is at someone's place for an extended period of time. Couch Surfing and sleeping in cars is still being homeless but finding an alternative for the moment of the time being. It is very common for those who have just gotten out of jail or are a part of the LGBTQ+ community to sleep in a car or couch surf because of problems at home
Zapata, Dr. Marisa. “Understanding Homelessness Podcast.” Spotify, 29 October 2012, https://open.spotify.com/show/7AfXEwVYU0ck02E7bJikpJ?si=45530d9b51424a4c.
The Understanding Homelessness Podcast by Dr. Marisa Zapata touches up on the misconceptions of homelessness and what we can do as a community to prevent it. After listening to the first two episodes so far, a big question was how to shelter those who are homeless, which is a question that is heard all the time. Zapata uses the idea of supporting homelessness. There is no exact solution to solving homelessness because of the fact that there will always be someone who is homeless but serving those who are. Meanwhile, when it comes to preparing homeless shelters, the government/city will direct the builders to other "important buildings", such as hotels, casinos, etc. This has led people to fear and believe that they aren't considered a citizen and even commit suicide.
